When a child’s sickness worsens, residents of the Tulare Hospital District can be assured they will get first-class care in the hospital’s pediatric unit. TDH opened the Pediatric Unit more than 10 years ago to care for sick children – infants up to teenagers. Nurses and staff are trained to care for most common injuries or illnesses, with respiratory illness the most prevalent. Parents often can stay in the same room with their sick child, even sleeping in the same bed. There is a play area designed specifically for children and often parents are allowed to bring in food more suited for children, such as hamburgers and fries. There is one registered nurse per every four patients in the unit. Nurses undergo special training. The most serious cases can be transferred to Children’s Hospital of Central California for more specialized care.
